Our land, our water, and our air are critical to our survival. The beautiful landscape and environment of this state is one of the many things that makes Kansas a great place to live. And just as our farmers are careful about how they take care of their fields and Kansans carefully take care of their yards, the purity of our state environment needs protecting, too.
The bottom line is that corporations are destroying the purity of our environment. Our land, water, and air are less safe because of their lack of caution and a lack of accountability. The health and wellbeing of everyday Kansans are constantly in danger because of this lack of responsibility and lack of regulation. These corporations think they can get away with it because they’re “too big” to be controlled. And when the guilt and responsibility of caring for our environment is placed on individual Kansans, these corporations are let off the hook.
This problem is also fueling climate change. Temperature changes are growing increasingly irregular, meaning people who rely on the weather or work outside are seeing their jobs and livelihoods affected. Severe weather is increasingly catastrophic and occurring more often, destroying homes, businesses, and lives.
I spend a lot of time outside– running, walking the dogs with Amy, playing sports, or attending a sporting event. I want future generations of Kansans to be able to do those things, without worrying about their health. I want rural Kansans to know that if a massive oil spill happens, something will immediately be done to ensure their water is not at risk. I want Kansans in more urban areas to know that the air they breathe is safe, not full of pollutants that can cause asthma or worse.
Let’s work towards a world where the energy we use does not put our health or our environment in danger. Let’s hold big corporations accountable for their destruction of our beautiful environment. I will fight for solutions in the statehouse that do exactly that.
