Kansans deserve access to quality, affordable healthcare.
While some seek to cut funding, cut access, or create obstacles in your path to getting the care you need, I plan to do the opposite. Whatever your abilities, whatever your conditions, whatever your age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious practices, or other background– you deserve care. And care for your mental health is just as important as care for your physical health. The two are connected.
The cost of healthcare, for too many of us, is absolutely wild. There’s no other way to put it. A visit to a doctor or specialist should not be the reason you end up paying rent late or missing payment of a different bill. Unfortunately, that is the actual reality for many Kansans today. It does not have to be this way!
For healthcare providers and workers, such as doctors, nurses, and support staff, the list of stressors is long, as well. Beyond the fight for fair pay and time off, too many are facing a shortage of resources and even a shortage of staff. Healthcare workers choose this line of work to help keep us well and alive. Representatives need to listen to them more frequently, to shrink that list of stressors.
The potential number of solutions seems endless. But the cost of saving lives is priceless. So instead of ignoring the humanity of the real people affected, hiding behind dumb arguments like “but how will we pay for it,” I’m ready to work with others in the Kansas House who have proposed solutions like expanding Medicaid and other ideas that will solve this crisis. We can be smart about our state's budget while also keeping our citizens alive and well.
